Southeast, Manatee will square off again
VENICE — They’re riddled with injuries and feeling a bit fatigued.
But they’re also one step closer toward their goal. So there were smiles aplenty on Southeast’s side of the gym Tuesday night after the Seminoles beat Bayshore 3-0 during the Class 5A-District 12 volleyball quarterfinals.
Oh, and another tidbit responsible for those grins? Southeast (18-8) will return to Venice tonight to face rival Manatee in a 5 p.m. semifinal, with the winner reaching Thursday’s championship match as well as next week’s regional playoffs.
“We’re really excited for Manatee,” said junior Katie DiGirolamo, who had seven kills and four blocks against the Bruins. “We love playing really good teams. And the better the team we play, the better we play.”
The volleyball edition of the county’s most storied rivalry has gotten a bit of a boost the last couple of years. Though Manatee has won every matchup, the Canes and Noles reached the title game of this year’s county tournament, came together to raise money for breast cancer during this month’s Volley for the Cure at Southeast — where the Seminoles took the first game and now will meet in the district semifinals for the second straight year. Athlete of the Week October 16 - Southeast High Volleyball Team
BRADENTON - An amazing thing happened the other night at Southeast High School. The Seminoles volleyball team came up with a plan to do something altruistic, and they recruited their most ardent rivals to accomplish it. That is why this week, we are honoring the Southeast volleyball team as our collective ABC 7 Athletes of the Week.
It is estimated that 182,460 women will be diagnosed with and 40,480 women will die of cancer of the breast in 2008. Early detection is the best weapon, so the Southeast volleyball team came up with a plan. "A lot of us are touched by the disease and we thought this 'Volley for the Cure' would be a great way to bring awareness and raise money," says Seminole volleyball coach Carmine Garofalo.
This 'Volley for the Cure' has been in production for a few months, and Tuesday night was the culmination of all the hard work. "It was great, since summer we have been working on this and to finally see it all come together so successfully was awesome," says Amanda Garofalo. [ Read More ]
Noles, Canes band together in cancer fight
Sports is meaningless, they say. A bottom feeder on the totem pole of life, they say.
In the wake of tragedy, sports is irrelevant. Utter nonsense. A waste of time and energy when placed face to face with real problems.
Such is the rhetoric whenever our world is rocked by catastrophe. It’s wrong.
World peace, the economic crisis, the war in Iraq — these are real issues that won’t be impacted at all by what happens inside football stadiums or on baseball diamonds. I will give you that. And losing on a Sunday hurts, but it’s nowhere near as wrenching as losing a loved one on any day of the week. Agreed, right?
OK. But sports are integral. They play a role. They are an essential ingredient. They heal. And anyone who doubts this wasn’t anywhere near Southeast High’s gymnasium Tuesday night, when Manatee’s and Southeast’s volleyball teams banded together to battle a stubborn foe that really needs to go the way of the pet rock. Breast cancer.
And when the Hurricanes and Seminoles took to the court Tuesday night during the Volley for the Cure ‘08, that was the opponent they had in mind. Even the pink program read Noles & Canes vs. Breast Cancer. [ Read More ]
Southeast High volleyball team hopes to raise cancer awareness
Marilynn Godfrey sat in the doctor's office twiddling her thumbs, tapping her feet on the floor. Sitting on the other side of the desk that chilly December morning three years ago was a doctor with news she never expected to hear.
"He told me, 'You are a positive for cancer,' " said Godfrey, 54. "My stomach dropped. I had to take a few deep breaths, then my reaction was: What do we have to do from here?"

Area spikers' goal is to help beat breast cancer
Pack the stands with pink!
That's the goal when Southeast High School hosts the Manatee Hurricanes in "Volleyball For The Cure" at 7 p.m. Oct. 14.
The renewal of this crosstown rivalry is also a way to raise awareness and education about breast cancer.
Everything at the match will be pink - both teams' uniforms, the refs' shirts, their whistles, even the ball.
Special pink "Volley For The Cure" T-shirts are being sold in advance, and there will be door prizes and games that night, too.
All proceeds go to the Susan G. Komen Foundation. To order a T-shirt or make a donation call coach Carmine Garofalo at (941) 752-4110 or visit www.LadyNolesVolleyForThecure.com
Southeast hopes Garofalo has healthier 2008 season
When the volleyball went over the net, Amanda Garofalo gave chase before the ball could smack Manatee High's shiny, tan court. As Garofalo bolted for the ball - with her head tilted toward the lights in the ceiling - she stepped on a teammate's foot and badly rolled her right ankle.
"When I was sitting in the trainer's room, I was thinking, 'This can't be happening now,' " said Garofalo, a 6-foot-tall senior middle blocker for Southeast. It was happening.
It was September 2007, and the Seminoles volleyball team was off to a 9-0 start. Garofalo and the Noles had snatched the first game from the powerful Hurricanes and were leading the second game when she went down and didn't return. Southeast's unblemished record was no more. [ Read More ]
